Coal Headwear’s New Pontoon Mesh Hat: The Perfect Summer Beach Volleyball Companion
Coal Headwear’s New Pontoon Mesh Hat: The Perfect Summer Beach Volleyball Companion
When you spend hours on the beach playing volleyball, every piece of gear matters. The right hat isn’t just about style—it helps keep you cool, comfortable, and protected from the sun. After spending plenty of time playing in both versions of Coal Headwear’s popular Pontoon hat, I was excited to test their new Pontoon Mesh Hat.
After several beach volleyball sessions, I can confidently say this new version is an outstanding addition for players looking to stay cooler during long days on the sand.
A Cooler Experience on Hot Summer Days
The biggest difference you’ll notice immediately is the mesh back panel. Unlike the original Pontoon hat, the new mesh design allows heat to escape, creating much better airflow while you’re playing.
During long beach volleyball matches, especially in the afternoon sun, I found that my head stayed noticeably cooler. The extra ventilation makes a real difference when you’re diving, serving, and constantly moving around the court.
Even after several hours on the beach, the hat remained comfortable without trapping excess heat.
Lightweight Comfort That You Forget You’re Wearing
One thing Coal Headwear has always done well is designing hats that feel incredibly lightweight.
The new Pontoon Mesh Hat continues that tradition.
It sits comfortably on your head without feeling bulky or heavy. Whether you’re jumping for blocks, chasing down shots, or relaxing between matches, the hat stays comfortable throughout the day.
The simple, clean design also gives off a relaxed beach vibe that looks just as good walking around town as it does on the volleyball court.
Dries Faster Between Matches
Another feature I really appreciated was how quickly the mesh version dries.
Beach volleyball usually means sweat, ocean spray, or occasionally rinsing your hat after a dusty match. Because of the ventilated mesh back, the hat dries noticeably faster than the original Pontoon hat.
If you’re playing in a tournament with multiple matches throughout the day, this is a huge advantage. A quick rinse between games leaves the hat feeling fresh, and it’s ready to wear again much sooner.
Still Floats and Performs Great
Like the original Pontoon hat, the mesh version still floats on water—a feature every beach athlete can appreciate. Whether you’re playing near the surf, paddleboarding, or simply relaxing at the beach, it’s nice knowing your hat won’t immediately sink if it ends up in the water.
The lightweight construction and quality materials continue to make it a dependable choice for active beach days.
One Trade-Off: Less Sun Protection
While I really enjoy the new mesh design, there is one important consideration.
The mesh back panel does not provide the same sun protection as the original full-fabric Pontoon hat. If you’re spending an entire day in direct sunlight, you’ll want to remember to apply sunscreen to the back of your head and neck, especially if you have shorter hair.
If maximum sun coverage is your top priority, the original Pontoon hat still has an advantage. However, if staying cool is more important during hot summer matches, the mesh version is an excellent choice.
